While you are in your field of ministry you will teach Bible lessons at high schools in Solwezi, Zambia and possibly teach them new sports/games. You will also be able to engage the youth in town as they move up and down the streets and gather at soccer fields. You can teach them new games and invite them to the Youth Bible Fellowship on Saturday mornings for discipleship and games. The youth of Zambia are eager to learn more sports, games, and truth of the Bible. Zambia is widely deceived about the truth of Christianity and your ministry can help turn the tide by making solid followers of Jesus among the youth.
Your first stop will be a joint orientation with other Nehemiah Teams. Learning the skills needed to carry out your assignment as well as team building will fill these first few days. Your team will fly to your final destination for the summer. Following your ministry time you will return to the US for a joint debrief...sharing all God has done over the summer!
As you are working with youth in a sports ministry you are allowed to wear appropriate sports clothing. However, at church and Bible studies it is culturally expected to wear long trousers and a collared shirt. Greetings are very important in Zambian culture.
Ministry will take place in Solwezi town. The territory will be Kaonde but in Solwezi there are many different tribes. The summer months are very dry and dusty. The temperatures are moderate in the day and cool/cold at night. Most people will live in very small block houses or mud huts in a slum or village setting. Like most Zambians many claim to be Christian but still have deeply rooted animistic beliefs and believe in a works based salvation.
Housing will likely be a small house on the same plot as the missionary. It has two rooms, a small kitchen, and a bathroom with toilet, sink, and shower. There is running water and electricity.
Due to the nature of this ministry a participant must be physically fit for athletic sports and able to walk long distances. Your mode of transportation will be by foot or bicycle.
