SERVE ANY 9 DAYS! Being here as part of a cultural exchange program will afford you incredible opportunities. You'll spend 7-10 days in one of the busiest cities on earth! As a participant in our program, you will attend seminars about the local culture/history/religion, learn basic Arabic from a local helper, and spend time paired with a local host who will give you memorable experiences with their culture. Your coming will encourage long-term workers and strengthen their presence in the country. You will be impacted deeply, and you will impact the people here also. You will leave here with a richer understanding of the culture and people. Join us in our city, and you will experience things that you can experience nowhere else. You'll plant seeds that we pray will bear fruit for eternity!
Dress is typically more conservative here, both for men and women. Guys should not wear shorts. Jeans are ok, along with khakis or dress pants. T-shirts are ok for tourist days, but a collared shirt (polos are ok) is preferred most other times. Ladies will need to dress modestly, in long sleeves and long pants or skirts. People pride themselves on being helpful and hospitable, and you will find that most people are friendly and eager to meet an American.
We live in a mega city. Expect to see lots and lots of people! Our city is both crowded and polluted. The majority of the people here are Sunni Muslim, though there are some local believers. Our country is mostly desert, so it is very dry. The summers are very hot with the winter being quite mild. You will live and work in the heart of our city. You will encounter people from all walks of life. There is a great deal of poverty, but you will also meet many people who are quite well off.
You will be housed in a small hotel while you are here.
Our city is polluted, so please bring appropriate medication if you are asthmatic or suffer from allergies. You can, however, buy inhalers here. We recommend that you do not drink the tap water here, but there is bottled water available in abundance. You need to be able to be on your feet for extended periods of time, as you will walk a lot, and you need to be comfortable with warm weather, as that is what we have most of the year. Please consult the CDC website for recommended immunizations.
Equipment to Bring:
If you have an unlocked phone, bring it. If not, we can find a basic phone for you here. Bring comfortable shoes for walking.
